FAQ

Frequently asked questions regarding the Leadership Minor.

How do I register for LEAD 499?

LEAD 499 is an online asynchronous course. It must be taken while engaged in a leadership practice experience (internship, research, field- based experience, internship, or extra-curricular involvement).

If you are engaging in research, it must be faculty-mentored; endorsed by faculty member or post-doctoral researchers. See http://expd.uw.edu/mge/apply/research/review/

Internships must take place for at least one academic quarter (minimum 6 hours/week) in a workplace setting where there is a stronger focus on student learning than is typical with part-time jobs.

Finally, you must have a 'supervisor' or someone who can conduct mid quarter and end of quarter evaluations.

How do I declare the minor?

To declare the Leadership Minor students must have

  1. Declared a major
  2. Completed at least 45 credits

Changes to your major/minor are posted once per quarter; the minor can be declared and posted any time during the quarter. You can declare the Leadership minor with your departmental adviser.

It should be noted that students will be encouraged to enroll in the required “Learning Leadership in Theory and Practice” (LEAD 100) gateway course within the first two years at the University, therefore, students may be introduced to the minor before they have declared a major.

What are good courses to start with?

You are encouraged to enroll in the required “Learning Leadership in Theory and Practice” (LEAD 100) gateway course within the first two years at the University of Washington. LEAD 100 counts for Social Sciences (SSc) in the Areas of Knowledge within your General Education.

Why are some courses not showing up on my degree audit?

If you're noticing a course not showing up in your Degree Audit - please email leadminor@uw.edu.

However, please keep in mind there is a minimum of 15 credits of upper-division courses. For a 25 credit minor this means that a max of 10 credits may be 100- and/or 200-level.  You will complete LEAD 100 which means you can have 5 additional credits apply from lower division coursework (100/200 level).

There is a course that I believe should count for the Leadership Minor. What steps do I take to make it count?

Petitions for elective courses are allowed, but must be approved by the curriculum committee. Students must petition a course via the form. The curriculum committee will meet to review petitions. Be sure you have read the requirements for what constitutes as an elective prior to submitting the petition and students will need to include a syllabus in their petition as well.

I've completed the minor, now what?

A student who declares the Leadership minor must submit a graduation application with their major adviser or department.  Once a student submits a graduation application, the leadership minor adviser will verify that all minor requirements are on track to be met by the student by their graduation quarter.

If a student has not met all requirements, the leadership minor adviser will contact the student directly with instructions for how to complete the minor's requirements.

If you no longer plan to complete the leadership minor, contact your departmental adviser ASAP to drop the Leadership Minor. Having it declared, but not meeting the minor's full requirements can delay the processing of your graduation certification and keep you from graduating officially!

Students gather in a bright campus lounge, sitting in a small circle and discussing a project with notebooks and drinks on a low table.
